Summary:
8LA teamed with Coast Arc Architects to undertake a master planning study for the Warwick Library and Art Gallery. The masterplan process involved extensive stakeholder liaison and site analysis to understand the opportunities and constraints to establishing a community focussed programmable space for this important central infrastructure.

Visions and principles were established early in the process which aligned site analysis observations and design principles with Council’s Corporate Vision, thus establishing the critical importance of this space and its relationship between the library, Gallery, Council HQ and the Centre of town. The master plan explored various options which were tested with stakeholders and explored the activation of adjoining carpark spaces as part of a midblock laneway connection to the main street with macro carpark artworks.

The master plan explored how works could be developed at macro and micro scales to activate the site, improve function and sense of entry and arrival, and increase the facility’s capacity to cater for larger groups and become both a destination and hub of activity for the community. Much of the work involved simple interventions such as pruning and rationalising existing planting to open up views, adding new screen planting and improving path connections, adding accessible connections between inside and outside and addressing level changes.

The master plan included high-level costings and a four stage delivery program of works to consider short-term, low-cost interventions and long-term major capital works projects.
