Summary:
Southern Downs Regional Council commissioned 8LA to develop a Learn to Ride Bike Pathway in Australiana Park, Warwick, as a Design and Construct contract with Naturform.
The project was envisaged by Council as a simple concrete pathway with Stop and Give Way signs, however, the design soon developed into a facility that complemented the other site facilities and reflected the landscape and character of the Southern Downs. The vision included undulating bike riding terrain over various obstacles that rural bike riders might encounter, such as a simulated cattle grid, a dry creek bed, a railway crossing and a culvert bridge. The flat concrete bike riding surface was also changed up with “whoops” and berms as well as a corrugated road section.
The “learn to ride” concept was kept in spirit with a balance track for the young riders, while their older siblings can enjoy the more challenging bike riding aspects, all within one area so that parental supervision can be maintained at all times.
The riders learn road safety behaviours through the inclusion of traffic lights, a roundabout and various intersections. The arid environment of Australiana Park particularly during the current drought meant that careful selection of plants was required and large areas of rock gardens were used featuring various stones sourced from the local area. Hardy native trees, shrubs and grasses were planted throughout the facility to provide shade and ground stabilisation. The use of recycled timbers adds a classic, country-Australian character to the site.
